Waimea Plantation Cottages sits on Kauai's sunny West Side and offers a rare mix of historic plantation charm, oceanfront lawns and a giant banyan tree. As a Kauai wedding photographer who has shot dozens of weddings here, I've put together what you need to know about a Waimea Plantation Cottages wedding, from ceremony locations to light and planning tips.

Where Is Waimea Plantation Cottages?
Waimea Plantation Cottages is at 9400 Kaumualii Highway in Waimea, on Kauai's West Side. The 43-acre oceanfront property has a long black-sand beach, old plantation-era cottages and open lawns, so it feels very different from the resorts on the South Shore and North Shore. The Cottages are about an hour from Lihue airport, and about 40 minutes from Poipu.
Waimea Plantation Cottages Wedding Ceremony Locations
The property has a few signature settings for ceremonies and receptions.
Under the Banyan Tree. Ceremonies are typically held under a 100-foot banyan tree in front of the historic Manager's Cottage, which gives you a shaded, dramatic backdrop with plenty of character.
Oceanfront Lawn. Open grass near the shoreline for ceremonies and receptions with ocean views.
Reception Tent. Receptions can be held on the lawn or in a tent.
Do You Need a Permit to Get Married at Waimea Plantation Cottages?
Ceremonies on the resort's own grounds are arranged through the resort, but the marriage license is a separate step, and a wedding on a public beach is a different story. I break down the process in my guide to Kauai wedding permits and my post on how to get married in Hawaii.
Can You Bring Your Own Photographer to Waimea Plantation Cottages?
Yes, you can absolutely bring your own photographer to Waimea Plantation Cottages as long as they share with the venue their licenses and certifications. Whenever I have a wedding there, I always share my most recent certs and they have always been welcoming. If you book me, I'm happy to coordinate with your planner and the Cottages.
Why Choose Waimea Plantation Cottages for Your West Side Wedding?
A historic setting. Plantation-era cottages and the old Manager's Cottage give your photos a sense of place you won't find at a modern resort.
The banyan tree. A towering banyan creates natural shade and a dramatic ceremony backdrop.
Oceanfront space. Lawns and a long black-sand beach give you ocean views and room to move.
Sunny West Side weather. The West Side is generally one of the drier, sunnier parts of the island.
A relaxed, less crowded feel. The West Side is quieter than the popular beach areas, which makes for calm ceremonies and portraits.
Best Time of Day for Waimea Plantation Cottages Wedding Photos
Late afternoon and sunset: Warm, golden light over the ocean and the lawns is my favorite for ceremonies and portraits. A ceremony about an hour or two before sunset leaves time for portraits as the sky changes.
Morning: Soft light, calm conditions and fewer people on the property. Great for a first look and couple portraits.
Midday: The banyan tree gives me natural shade to work with, even when the sun is high.
West Side Weather Considerations
The West Side is generally sunny and dry, but trade winds and afternoon heat are worth planning for. I plan a backup with every couple ahead of time so the day stays relaxed whatever the weather does.
Photography Possibilities at Waimea Plantation Cottages
The property gives me a lot to work with, and the variety is what makes it one of my favorite West Side wedding locations.
Banyan tree portraits. The huge banyan gives me shade, texture and a dramatic frame for ceremony photos and portraits.
Historic cottage details. The plantation-era cottages and the Manager's Cottage add character for detail shots and wider portraits.
Oceanfront lawn photos. Open grass near the water gives me room for relaxed couple portraits and candid moments with family.
Black-sand beach portraits. The dark sand and surf make for moody, striking images, especially in late light.
Elopement-style sessions. If you're planning a tiny ceremony, I can slow everything down and spend more time on portraits around Waimea. See my elopement photography and wedding photography pages for how I work.
Nearby Places to Stay and Celebrate on the West Side
Waimea and Kekaha have small restaurants, shops and beaches for a welcome dinner or after-party, and Waimea Canyon is a short drive inland. For more options, see my guide to Kauai wedding venues and my guide to the best beaches to elope on Kauai.
Planning Tips for a Waimea Plantation Cottages Wedding
Contact the resort early. Ask about availability, as you have a date in mind. This location is known to book up fast, so the earlier, the better.
Ask about vendor rules. Confirm what the resort requires for photographers, planners, caterers and other vendors before you book.
Plan around the light. Plan the ceremony roughly an hour or two before sunset so there's time for portraits in golden light.
Plan for sun and wind. The West Side is sunny, so think about shade, water for guests and decorations that handle a breeze.
Build in travel time. The West Side is farther from Lihue than many people expect.
Bring a photographer who knows the island. Someone who's familiar with the light, the weather and the area can make the day feel calmer and the photos better.
