Where To Propose on Kauai
A wide North Shore beach with green mountains behind it, popular for surprise proposals. Summer water is usually calm, and I’ll help you plan around winter swells.

Capturing the Proposal
Option 1: Hidden Photographer
This option is where I would be either hiding or capturing from afar with a long telephoto lens. This is a great option for someone looking for complete privacy while still being able to capture the moment. Then after the proposal we can take additional photos around the location.
Prior to the time of proposal I work with the client on choosing exact location, as well as send instructions on where to be, which way you should be facing, where to park, etc. just to make absolutely sure everything will be captured.

Surprise proposal in Hā’ena, Kauai. I used the “bystander” method: I acted like a beachgoer and offered to take their photo while he proposed.
Option 2: The Bystander Approach
In this option, I would be along the beach at a pre-determined area, pretending to take pictures of the ocean or the surfers. You would come up to me and ask if I could take a picture of you two on your phone. You hand me your phone, while I’m taking a picture you can get on your knee and propose then.
This is a great option for a couple who wants very sharp and close images during the proposal and don’t mind if I’m close by. It also keeps the proposal very much as a surprise, so they shouldn’t see it coming if everything goes according to plan.
Option 3: Surprise In Photo Session
In this option, you would tell your partner something like “I booked a photo session for the two of us so we can have some nice photos from our trip.” The three of us would meet up and early in our session I would instruct your partner through a pose while you move behind and get on one knee.
This is a great option for a couple who wants very sharp and close images during the proposal and don’t mind if I’m close by. Unlike Option 1 where I was about 75 yards away, in this option I would be much closer as I will be working with you two prior.

Upon receiving an inquiry from you, I will send over a price sheet detailing process and package information. If none of these packages are quite what you are looking for, I’d be happy to build a custom package based on your needs.

Once a standard or customized package has been chosen,I will send instructions on putting down a deposit to book the date of the event, as well as contracts for my services.

I have found it valuable to get to know my clients a little bit before the proposal, so via Zoom, phone, or in person, I’d like to chat with you about your vision for the moment, as well as other needs or preferences you may have. There are three common options. In the hidden photographer option, I capture the moment from afar with a long telephoto lens so you get complete privacy. In the bystander approach, I act like a stranger at the beach and you ask me to take a photo on your phone. Or you can tell your partner you booked a couples session, and I direct them into a pose while you get down on one knee. We choose the best option together before the day.

Kauai weather can change quickly, and showers usually pass fast. We plan a backup time or location ahead of time, and I’ll keep an eye on the forecast with you. Winter swells can make some North Shore beaches difficult, so a South Shore location like Shipwrecks Beach is often a good alternative.

Before the day, I work with you on the exact spot and send instructions on where to park, where to be and which way to face so everything is captured. I stay out of sight or blend in as a bystander, and I communicate only with you, so your partner has no idea until the moment you ask.
