10 Things Your Wedding Photographer Wants You to Know

After years of photographing weddings on Kauai, I've learned there are some things couples don't always think about when planning their big day. These insights can make the difference between good wedding photos and absolutely incredible ones that you'll treasure forever.

1. Lighting is everything, and timing matters more than you think

The best wedding photos happen during what photographers call the "golden hour" - that magical time right before sunset when the light is soft and warm. If you're planning an outdoor ceremony, consider scheduling it about an hour before sunset for the most flattering light. Harsh midday sun creates unflattering shadows, while overcast skies give us that perfect, even lighting.

2. Your timeline should include buffer time

Weddings almost never run exactly on schedule, and that's totally normal. Build in 15-30 minutes of cushion time between events. This way, if your hair takes a little longer or you want extra time for family photos, you won't feel rushed. A relaxed couple always photographs better than a stressed one.

3. Weather backup plans aren't just for venues

Even in paradise, weather can be unpredictable. On Kauai especially, you might see a quick shower roll through, but don't let that worry you. Some of my most stunning photos have happened right after rain when the light is incredible and everything looks fresh and vibrant. Having a few umbrellas handy can actually create some romantic shot opportunities.

4. Your guest's phones and cameras can be distracting

During your ceremony, consider having an unplugged wedding where guests put away their devices. Not only will this help everyone be more present, but it means I won't have to edit around dozens of phones blocking the view. Your guests will get better photos from me anyway, and they'll actually experience your ceremony instead of watching it through a screen.

5. The getting-ready photos are some of my favorites

Don't rush through getting ready on your wedding morning. Some of the most emotional and beautiful photos happen during these quiet moments, like your mom helping with your dress and your partner's nervous laughter while getting ready with friends. These candid moments tell your story just as much as the ceremony itself.

6. Communication about family dynamics helps me help you

If there are divorced parents, family tensions, or complicated relationships I should know about, please fill me in ahead of time. This helps me navigate family photo time smoothly and avoid any awkward situations. I can also suggest groupings that work best for everyone involved.

7. Your location choice affects everything

For Kauai weddings specifically, each side of the island has its own personality and challenges. The North Shore gives you those dramatic mountain backdrops but has a higher chance of rain. The South Side offers more predictable weather and gorgeous blue water. Let me know what's most important to you—dramatic landscapes, reliable weather, or easy accessibility—and I can help guide location decisions.

8. Details matter, but don't stress about perfection

I love photographing all the little details you've planned, including your rings, shoes, flowers, and decorations. But remember that the most important photos are of you two and your emotions. A slightly wilted flower or wrinkled dress won't ruin anything. Authentic moments always trump perfect styling.

9. Vendor relationships make your day smoother

Photographers who work regularly on Kauai know the best vendors, locations, and logistics. I've worked with amazing officiants, florists, and planners on Kauai who understand the island's unique requirements, from permit needs to weather considerations. These connections can make your planning process much easier.

10. Trust your photographer's experience

You hire me because you love my work and trust my vision. While I absolutely want to capture any specific shots you have in mind, you can also trust me to suggest poses, locations, and timing that will give you the best results. I know how to work with the light, the location, and the flow of your day to create images that are uniquely yours.
