Getting Married at McBryde Gardens on Kauai: A Complete Guide

Thinking about getting married at McBryde Gardens on Kauai? Tucked into Lawai Valley on the South Shore, McBryde Garden is one of the most beautiful places on the island for a waterfall elopement or small garden wedding. As a Kauai elopement photographer, I love working here: tall trees, tropical plants, shaded paths, and a waterfall that makes a backdrop you can't find on a beach. Here's everything you need to know about getting married at McBryde Garden.

Where Is McBryde Garden?

McBryde Garden is part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) and sits in Lawai Valley on Kauai's South Shore, a short drive from Poipu and Koloa. If you're staying at one of the Poipu resorts, you're only a few minutes away. It's a good fit for couples who want lush jungle scenery without driving up to the North Shore.

Can You Elope or Get Married at McBryde Garden?

Yes. NTBG hosts weddings and private events at McBryde Garden, with several ceremony sites to choose from. They range from small waterfall ceremony spots to the open lawn of Big Valley, and capacity depends on the site, from small elopement groups up to large celebrations. Events are available seven days a week.

Because this is a private botanical garden and not a public beach, you book your date directly with NTBG instead of getting a state beach permit. Fees, availability, and photography rules are set by the garden, so contact their events team early.

You'll still need a valid Hawaii marriage license and a licensed officiant to make your ceremony legal. Here's my full guide to getting a marriage license in Hawaii, and a breakdown of Kauai wedding permits so you know when you do and don't need one.

Why Choose McBryde Gardens for Your Kauai Elopement?

I've photographed couples at McBryde Garden, and these are the reasons I recommend it:

A real waterfall backdrop. Few places let you say your vows in front of a waterfall without a long hike. At McBryde Garden the scenery comes to you.

Privacy. Unlike a public beach, a garden ceremony is much easier to keep intimate. You won't be competing with beachgoers, and your photos won't have strangers in the background.

Reliable weather for Kauai. The South Shore is generally the sunniest and driest part of the island, which makes McBryde Garden a strong choice when you want to lower the chance of rain.

Variety in one location. Waterfall, tropical flowers, big trees, and open valley views all in the same place means a wide range of wedding photos without driving around the island.

Easy logistics. The garden is close to Poipu and Koloa, with plenty of places to stay, eat, and celebrate nearby.

Best Time of Day for a McBryde Garden Wedding

Light in a valley garden works differently than on a beach.

Morning: Soft, even light. This is a great time for a waterfall ceremony and portraits under the trees.

Late afternoon: Warm, golden light filters through the canopy and glows on the greenery.

Midday: Open areas get harsh sun, but shaded spots near the waterfall stay flattering. I have found mid-day extremely beautiful by the watefall area.I'll plan locations around the light so you're never squinting.

Your garden's booking time will shape the schedule, so I'll help you pick a window that works with the light.

Weather Considerations

South Shore weather is typically drier than the North Shore, but this is still Hawaii and showers can pass through quickly, especially in the winter months. A little rain also keeps the waterfall full and the plants bright green. Ask NTBG about their rain plan when you book, and check the hourly forecast rather than the daily summary.

Photography Possibilities at McBryde Garden

As a photographer who has worked in this garden, here are the scenes I look for:

The waterfall. You in front of it, for vows and a first look.

Garden paths. Shaded paths with layers of tropical greenery.

Big Valley. The open lawn and mountain views for wider, more cinematic frames.

Flower details. Close-ups with tropical flowers that match your bouquet.

If you want variety, we can pair your garden session with a sunset at a South Shore beach in the same day. Or look at my guide to the best beaches to elope on Kauai.

Nearby Places to Stay and Celebrate

McBryde Garden is minutes from Poipu and Koloa, so you have lots of options.

Poipu resorts: The Grand Hyatt Kauai, the Sheraton Kauai Resort, and Koloa Landing Resort are all close by.

Vacation rentals and condos: Plenty in Poipu and Koloa for families and small groups.

Dinner after your ceremony: Koloa and Poipu have a wide range of restaurants for a small celebration dinner.

Planning Your McBryde Garden Elopement

A few things to keep in mind:

Book early. Popular dates fill up, especially in peak seasons. Contact NTBG as soon as you have a date in mind.

Footwear. Paths can be uneven and damp. Bring comfortable shoes and change into your wedding shoes at the ceremony site.

Mosquitoes. It's a tropical valley. Bring bug spray and apply it well before getting dressed.

Group size. Different ceremony sites fit different group sizes. Tell NTBG your guest count at the start so they can place you at the right one.

Photographer logistics. Let me know your booking time as soon as you have it and I'll plan the day, including time for portraits before or after your ceremony.

Timeline. I recommend one to two hours of coverage for a garden elopement. That's enough for your ceremony, portraits at the waterfall, and a few quiet moments together. See my elopement packages for details.
