How to Plan a Kauai Adventure Session Before or After Your Wedding

If you're already flying all the way to Kauai to get married, adding an adventure session to your trip is a great way to capture candid moments on the island. Your wedding day moves fast. Between the ceremony, the family portraits, and the celebration, there's rarely enough time to slow down and just soak in where you are. An adventure photography session gives you the opportunity to explore the most stunning island in the world, with photos to show for it!

What is an Adventure Session?

An adventure session is a portrait session for just the two of you, usually an hour or two, in a location that inspires you. It's not a styled shoot and there's no schedule pressure. You show up, you explore, and I capture you in it. These sessions work beautifully as a honeymoon session the day after your wedding, a relaxed way to wrap up your trip, or even as a pre-wedding session to get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day.

Why Add One to Your Kauai Trip?

Your wedding day photos are incredible, but they tell the story of one specific day. An adventure session tells the story of you as a couple in this beautiful place you traveled across the world to visit. It gives you the freedom to hike somewhere your wedding venue just couldn't accommodate, wear something different, and be a little more spontaneous with the experience. And for couples who've never had professional photos taken before their wedding, doing a session beforehand is one of the best ways to shake off any nerves and get used to having a camera around. By the time your wedding day arrives, you'll feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera!

When Should You Schedule Your Adventure Session?

There are a few timing options that work really well depending on your itinerary:

The Day Before Your Wedding: This is my favorite option for couples who want to feel relaxed and camera-ready on their wedding day. We pick a location that isn't your ceremony spot, explore for an hour or two, and you arrive at your wedding feeling like pros.

The Morning of Your Wedding: This one works well for couples with an afternoon or evening ceremony. A short sunrise session gives you some quiet together time before the day gets going, and the early morning light on Kauai is beautiful.

The Day After Your Wedding: This is a great option if you want to wear your wedding attire again somewhere more adventurous, like a waterfall or a hike through the jungle. Some couples choose to wear something completely different and just enjoy a relaxed portrait session while their wedding day high is still very much alive.

During Your Honeymoon: If you're staying on Kauai for several days after your wedding, scheduling a session mid-trip is a great way to mark the occasion and come home with photos that reflect your honeymoon experience, not just the wedding day.

Where to Photograph Your Kauai Adventure Session

This is where it gets fun. Kauai is one of the most photographically diverse places on the planet, and picking the right location depends entirely on what kind of experience you're after.

Here are some of my favorite spots across the island:

The North Shore is lush, dramatic, and endlessly photogenic. The tradeoff is a higher chance of rain, but some of my favorite photography sessions have happened in a North Shore drizzle.

The East Side offers thick jungle greenery, towering sea cliffs, and beautiful sunrise light. It's a little cooler and breezier, which actually makes it really comfortable for an active session.

The South Shore is the driest part of the island, which makes it a reliable option year-round, with a rugged coastline, golden light, and almost no crowds.

The West Side feels quieter and more remote, which I love for intimate photo sessions.

A Word on Weather

As I often mention, Hawaii's golden rule applies here too: never leave the house without an umbrella and a swimsuit. Weather on Kauai is unpredictable, and I've learned to love a little rain in a session! However, I do always have backup location options in mind in case conditions change. I'll be in touch with you leading up to your session with an updated plan based on the forecast.
