Getting Married at Kalihiwai Waterfall on Kauai: A Complete Guide

bride and groom embracing under waterfall in Kauai

Few Kauai wedding photos stop people in their tracks like a couple standing in a pool beneath a jungle waterfall. Kalihiwai Falls, on Kauai's North Shore between Princeville and Kilauea, has that kind of scenery. As a Kauai elopement photographer, I'm often asked about waterfall elopements, so here's an honest guide to planning a Kalihiwai Waterfall wedding or elopement photo session, including what to know about access.

Where Is Kalihiwai Waterfall?

Kalihiwai Falls is a multi-tiered waterfall on a tributary of the Kalihiwai River on Kauai's North Shore, near Princeville and Kilauea. It's a short drive from Hanalei Bay.

Can You Elope at Kalihiwai Waterfall?

This is the most important thing to understand: the best views of Kalihiwai Falls are on private land, and access involves crossing private property. Landowners decide who can visit, and general public access is forbidden. Please don't show up and walk in on your own. Trespassing is not worth it for you, the landowners, or the community.

If you want a waterfall elopement and prefer a public, easier option, ask me about alternatives. Many Kauai waterfalls and garden settings can deliver a similar look, including McBryde Gardens.

You'll also need a Hawaii marriage license and a licensed officiant to make your ceremony legal. See my guide to getting a marriage license in Hawaii and my breakdown of Kauai wedding permits.

Why Choose a Waterfall for Your Kauai Elopement?

Drama. Falling water, deep green jungle, and a natural pool make for photos that look nothing like a beach wedding.

Privacy. A waterfall elopement is intimate by nature. It's usually just the two of you, your officiant, and me.

Adventure. If you'd rather get your feet wet than stand in a crowd, a waterfall session feels like an experience, not just a ceremony.

North Shore access. Princeville, Hanalei, and Kilauea are close by, so you can add a beach sunset to the same day.

Best Time of Day for a Waterfall Elopement

Morning: Softer light, cooler temperatures, and fewer people.

Late afternoon: Warm light filtering through the jungle canopy.

Midday: The canopy blocks harsh sun in most spots before noon, but between noon and 3 there can be some harsh light in spots. The good part is there are less mosquitos. I'll plan angles to keep the light flattering.

Weather and Water Conditions

The North Shore gets more rain than the South Shore, and a waterfall's flow, water color, and pool conditions change with recent rain. Heavy rain can make streams unsafe, so I always watch the forecast and keep a backup plan. Safety comes before the shot.

Photography Possibilities at Kalihiwai Waterfall

Here are the scenes I look for at a jungle waterfall:

The wide frame. The two of you in front of the falls, with green jungle all around.

In the pool. Standing together in the water beneath the waterfall.

Quiet closeness. Close, intimate moments with the water and greenery as the backdrop.

The details. Your bouquet, rings, and dress texture against the wet stone and leaves.

Want more variety? We can pair your waterfall session with a sunset at Hanalei Bay or Hā'ena Beach, or browse my best beaches to elope on Kauai.

Nearby Places to Stay and Celebrate

Princeville: Resorts and vacation rentals a few minutes away.

Hanalei: Boutique stays, restaurants, and a relaxed celebration dinner.

Kilauea: A quiet town with good resaurants and local food.

Planning Tips for a Waterfall Elopement

Book early. Arranged waterfall access has limited availability. Reach out as soon as you have a date.

Footwear. Expect wet, slippery rocks. Brides, I highly recommend flats instead of heels.

Dress choice. A shorter or lighter dress to minimize mud and water. Plan for it to get wet.

Mosquitoes. Bring repellent and apply it before getting dressed.

Timeline. I recommend one hour for a waterfall elopement. See my elopement packages for details.

Ready to Plan Your Kauai Waterfall Elopement?

A waterfall elopement gives you privacy, adventure, and photos that feel completely different from the usual beach wedding. If you're looking for a Kauai elopement photographer who knows the North Shore and how to work with its light, I'd love to hear your plans. Reach out any time.
