Dreaming of a jungle garden wedding on Kauai's North Shore? Princeville Botanical Garden is one of the most photogenic spots near Hanalei, with tropical flowers, fruit trees, winding paths, and the kind of deep green that makes every photo feel like a postcard. As a Kauai wedding and elopement photographer, I love the North Shore's lush scenery, and here's what to know before you plan a Princeville Botanical Garden wedding or elopement photo session.

Where Is Princeville Botanical Garden?
Princeville Botanical Garden sits in the Princeville area on Kauai's North Shore, minutes from Hanalei Bay, Hanalei town, and Kilauea. It's a family-owned working garden rather than a public park, with an address on Ahonui Place in Princeville. If you're staying in Princeville or Hanalei, you're only a short drive away.
Can You Get Married at Princeville Botanical Garden?
This is the first question I'd answer before falling in love with the venue. Princeville Botanical Garden is best known for guided garden tours, and visits are by reservation only. There is no walk-in or self-guided entry. They are now also hosting weddings on property, and based on my time there I think it's a perfect venue for a small wedding of between six and 30 guests. For more information please visit their website.
If a ceremony at the garden isn't possible for your date, you still have great options. Many couples exchange vows at a nearby North Shore beach and then add a garden portrait session, or choose another Kauai garden venue. Take a look at my guide to getting married at McBryde Gardens on the South Shore, my guide to my guide to getting married at Kalihiwai Waterfalland my list of the best beaches to elope on Kauai.
Whichever location you choose, you'll still need a Hawaii marriage license and a licensed officiant to make your ceremony legal. Here's my guide to getting a marriage license in Hawaii, and a breakdown of Kauai wedding permits.
Why Choose the North Shore for Your Kauai Elopement?
I love photographing couples in North Shore gardens, and these are the reasons I recommend a jungle setting:
Jungle scenery. Tropical foliage, fruit trees, flowers, and mossy textures give your photos depth that a bare beach can't.
Privacy. A private garden is far quieter than a busy public beach, so your portraits stay intimate.
Everything in one area. Princeville, Hanalei, Hanalei Bay, and Hā'ena are all close together, so you can combine a garden session with a beach sunset the same day.
Variety. Waterfalls, mountains, beaches, and gardens are all within a short drive.
Best Time of Day for Garden Photos on the North Shore
Morning: Soft, even light and cooler temperatures. A good time for portraits under the trees.
Late afternoon: Warm, golden light filtering through the canopy. This is my favorite for couple portraits.
Midday: Bright and contrasty in open areas, but beautiful and well-lit under canopy and by stream.
Tours start at set times, so if your session is tied to a garden booking, I'll build the timeline around the light you get.
Weather Considerations
The North Shore is greener for a reason: it gets more rain than the South Shore, especially in the winter months. Showers usually pass quickly, and a little rain keeps everything bright and vivid. Paths can be muddy, so plan your footwear and dress with that in mind. I always check the hourly forecast and keep a flexible plan.
Photography Possibilities at a North Shore Garden
Here are the scenes I look for in a lush Kauai garden:
Layered greenery. Portraits framed by tropical leaves, flowers, and tall trees.
Winding paths. Mossy textures and shaded trails for romantic, moody frames.
Flower details. Close-ups with tropical flowers that match your bouquet.
Candid moments. Natural frames as you walk and explore together.
To add variety, we can pair your garden session with a sunset at Hanalei Bay or Hā'ena Beach.
Nearby Places to Stay and Celebrate
Princeville resorts and condos: Several resorts and vacation rentals are minutes from the garden.
Hanalei: Boutique stays, cafes, and restaurants for a relaxed celebration dinner.
Kilauea: A quiet town with local food and farm-fresh options.
[CONFIRM: add specific resort and restaurant names you'd like to recommend.]
Planning Tips for a Princeville Garden Session
Reserve early. Garden visits are by reservation and spots fill up, especially in peak seasons.
Footwear. Paths can be uneven and muddy. Bring comfortable shoes and change at the site.
Mosquitoes. Bring repellent and apply it before getting dressed.
Bring water and a hat. It's warm and humid, even in the shade.
Photographer logistics. Let me know your booking time as soon as you have it, and I'll plan around the light and the garden's schedule.
Timeline. I recommend one to two hours for a garden elopement session. See my elopement packages for details.
